Assumptions
- India tax logic is a simplified FY 2026-27 salaried-individual model.
- New-regime marginal relief is modeled in simplified form; surcharge, special-rate incomes, and state-specific details are not fully modeled.
- Verify current rules with a qualified tax advisor before filing or choosing a regime.
Formula Used
Exemption = min(actual HRA, rent paid - 10% salary, city salary limit)
This is the common salaried-employee HRA exemption framework, simplified for planning.
Example salaried HRA
- Use annual basic salary.
- Enter annual rent and HRA.
- Compare the three exemption limits.
Common Mistakes and Limitations
Common mistakes
- Treating an estimate as a guaranteed outcome.
- Ignoring fees, taxes, penalties, or changing rates.
- Using annual and monthly rates interchangeably.
- Forgetting that a calculator is only as reliable as the inputs entered.
Limitations
- The rule may be too simple for complex financial situations.
- It does not replace personalized advice from a qualified professional.
- Real results can change because of taxes, fees, rates, inflation, and behavior.

What is HRA Calculator for Salaried Employees?
HRA Calculator for Salaried Employees answers a specific tax question without opening a spreadsheet. Enter annual basic salary, annual da forming part of salary, annual hra received and annual rent paid, review the estimate as you type, and open the formula block to see how the result is produced.
It uses INR defaults, Indian number formatting, and India-specific assumptions where relevant.
Inputs explained
Annual basic salary
Basic salary for the year, from your salary breakup — excluding HRA, allowances and bonus. Supported range: 0 to 100,000,000.
Annual DA forming part of salary
Dearness allowance for the year, counted only if your terms say it forms part of salary for retirement benefits. Supported range: 0 to 100,000,000.
Most private-sector salary structures have no DA — leave it at zero if yours does not.
Annual HRA received
The house rent allowance component of your salary for the year, from your breakup. Supported range: 0 to 100,000,000.
Annual rent paid
Rent you actually paid for the year, for accommodation you do not own. Supported range: 0 to 100,000,000.
Why it matters: The exemption is capped by rent minus 10% of salary, so low rent can shrink it to nothing.
City type
Whether you live in a metro for HRA purposes. Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai count as metro under the exemption rules.
Why it matters: Metro status raises the salary-linked cap from 40% to 50%, which can change the exemption materially.
Tax regime
Which regime you are taxed under for the year.
Why it matters: The HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available under the old regime only. Under the new regime the HRA you receive is fully taxable.
If you are not sure, compare the two regimes before deciding.
